Cita-cita kita yang mulia – Our noble aspirations

I am an idealist- people have told me I set myself up for disappointment being an idealist, but I think if you have no ideals and no aspirations, then you are lost with nothing to work towards. And I raise my bar really high!

As Singapore celebrates it’s 47th year of independence today, I ruminate the meaning of our national anthem, Majulah Singapura. Onward Singapore! optimistic, hopeful, idealistic even.

Here’s the national anthem in it’s original language (Malay), and the translation in English (from Wikipedia).

“Majulah Singapura”

Mari kita rakyat Singapura
sama-sama menuju bahagia;
Cita-cita kita yang mulia,
berjaya Singapura.
Marilah kita bersatu
dengan semangat yang baru;
Semua kita berseru,
Majulah Singapura,
Majulah Singapura!
Marilah kita bersatu
dengan semangat yang baru;
Semua kita berseru,
Majulah Singapura,
Majulah Singapura!
“Onward Singapore”

Come, fellow Singaporeans
Let us progress towards happiness together
May our noble aspiration bring
Singapore success
Come, let us unite
In a new spirit
Together we proclaim
Onward Singapore
Onward Singapore
Come, let us unite
In a new spirit
Together we proclaim
Onward Singapore
Onward Singapore

Majulah Singapura!

Happy National Day- may we find happiness and success, wherever we may be. Have a great day, everyone!
